Iron supplement
Calcium supplement
Why timing matters
Calcium and iron are absorbed through the same pathway in the small intestine, so eating or supplementing them close together means they compete — and iron usually loses. Spacing them out lets each one absorb properly.
- 01Aim for at least 2 hours between doses — 4 or more is ideal if your schedule allows it.
- 02Iron absorbs best on an empty stomach, away from dairy, coffee, and tea as well as calcium.
- 03Pairing iron with vitamin C — citrus, a small glass of juice — improves absorption instead of blocking it.
- 04This applies to combined multivitamins too: check labels for both minerals in one pill.
